# View a unified contact profile

## One profile, every app

Clicking a contact opens their **unified detail view**. This page resolves the person by email and pulls together every record that shares that address, so you see the full picture in one place.
## Linked records

The profile groups linked records by app — **CRM**, **Accounting**, **Community**, **Support**, **Surveys**, and **CCMS**. If the same person is a CRM contact and also a support requester, both records appear, each linking back to its own app. This makes it easy to jump from the directory into the app where the work actually happens.
## The canonical contact

Behind the scenes, each person resolves to a single **canonical contact** for your tenant, deduplicated by email. The first time you open a profile, the app links the source record to this canonical contact automatically. Custom field values are stored against the canonical contact, which means **they follow the person across every app** rather than being tied to one source record.
## Custom fields on the profile

If your administrators have defined custom fields, you will see them on the profile with editable values. Fill them in and save to attach that data to the person everywhere they appear. To learn how these fields are set up, see [Create custom fields for contacts](create-custom-fields).
## Note

A profile needs an email address to link records across apps. People recorded without an email appear in the directory but cannot be merged with records in other apps.
