# Caption or dub a joined video (do it in this order)

## Join first, then caption

If a video is going to have an intro added, **join it first and caption the joined video**. Doing it the other way round leaves your captions out of sync.

Here is why. Subtitles are a list of lines with timings — “this line appears at 8.2 seconds”. Those timings are measured from the start of the video. Put a 3-second intro in front afterwards and everything in the video has moved 3 seconds later, but the timings have not: every line now appears 3 seconds early, for the whole video.

The same applies to a dub, and to burned-in captions — with burn-in the mistake is permanent, because the text is rendered into the picture.

## The order to work in

- Join your clips into a Composition.

- From the finished Composition, choose **Caption this video**.

- Transcribe, edit the cues, add translations, dub or burn in as usual.

## If you already captioned the wrong video

If you have captioned a demo and then realise an intro needs to go in front of it, the cleanest fix is to join the clips and transcribe the joined video. Re-transcribing is quick, and it gives you timings that match the video you are actually shipping.
