# Uploading a file and choosing the file type

## Uploading

On a string set, click **Upload**, choose your file, pick the target language (or leave as the primary/source language), and choose a conflict mode (update or skip existing strings).
## File type override

String Manager guesses the format from the file extension and pre-selects it in the **File type** dropdown. You can override it — useful when the content is, say, XML or DITA but the file isn't named `.xml` or `.dita`. Just pick the correct type before uploading.
### Filter templates

For configurable formats (CSV, JSON, YAML, XML, DITA, and others) you can apply a saved **filter template** or paste an inline JSON config to control exactly which elements/columns become strings.
