# Turn on product analytics

**Updated:** 2026-10-04

## Two switches, and you need both

Product analytics is off until you turn it on in two places. That is deliberate, not an inconvenience: this feature records which controls the people using your product click, and an existing installation should never start doing that because we shipped an update.
### 1. Enable it for the site

Go to **Product Adoption → Install** and turn on **Product analytics**. This is the switch you can flip at any time, including to stop collection immediately without touching your website.
### 2. Re-copy the snippet

Turning the setting on does *not* change a page that is already installed. The snippet on that page gains one attribute:
```
j.dataset.capture="auto";
```

Copy the snippet again and deploy it. Until you do, nothing is captured — the SDK reads that attribute from its own script tag before it attaches any listener, so with the attribute absent no handler exists and nothing reads your page.
## Why it works this way

Reading the switch from the script tag rather than fetching it means "off" genuinely means no code is watching, rather than capturing and then discarding. It also puts the switch in your own HTML, where your engineers can see it in a code review.

The server-side setting is the kill switch. If you need collection to stop right now, turn it off there and events are refused on arrival, whatever is deployed on your site.
### Your guides keep working either way

Tours, tooltips, checklists and banners are unaffected by this switch. Turning analytics off never stops a guide from running.
