# Name a feature and get its history

## Why you can name things later

Most analytics tools need you to decide what matters *before* you ship: somebody writes a list of events, an engineer adds them to the code, and you wait for data. Ask a new question and you wait another month.

Because auto-capture records interactions as they happen, a feature here is defined afterwards — and the moment you define it, its history is already there.
## How a feature is matched

A feature is a set of conditions, not a single selector. You might say: the tag is `button`, and the label contains `Upgrade`.

Matching on several signals is what lets a feature survive a redesign. Change the button's styling, wrap it in another element, move it down the page — the label and the tag still match, and the feature keeps reporting. A single brittle selector would report zero after the next deploy, and a funnel reading zero looks like a product problem rather than a tracking one.
### Conditions you can use

- **event** — the event name, for anything sent with `track`.
- **page** — the page it happened on, with identifiers in the URL folded together.
- **tag**, **text**, **href** — what was clicked.
- **tc_id** — the `data-tc-id` you added.

## The limit worth knowing

History goes back as far as your retained events, not to the beginning of time. Define a feature and you see it across the events still held for your plan.
