# Getting started with Org Charts

**Category:** [Org Charts](https://help.totalctrl.app/hc/totalctrl/totalctrl-help-center/en-US/categories/org-charts-1)
**Updated:** 2026-10-04

## What it is for

Org Charts draws the shape of an organization. A chart is built by hand, so it can show whatever you need it to — the team as it is today, a proposed restructure, a project team drawn from three departments, or a customer's organization you are selling into.
## Three steps

- Open **Org Charts** and choose **New chart**.
- Open the **Builder** and add people. Each one is either somebody from your workspace or a name you type in.
- Share it: a link for colleagues, an embed for a website or intranet, or export it into your wiki.

## It does not need the Employee Directory

Org Charts stands on its own. It reads the list of active people in your workspace and nothing else, so it works whether or not your workspace has the Employee Directory app.

If you do have the Directory, it can hand you a starting point — see *Starting from the Employee Directory*.
## A chart is a drawing, not a source of truth

This is the thing to understand before you start. A chart does not update itself. Somebody joining, leaving or changing manager does not change a chart you drew last month — which is exactly what you want for a proposal or a snapshot, and exactly what you have to remember for a chart people treat as current.
