# Building a chart

**Category:** [Org Charts](https://help.totalctrl.app/hc/totalctrl/totalctrl-help-center/en-US/categories/org-charts-1)
**Updated:** 2026-10-04

## Two kinds of person

- **Somebody in your workspace** — pick them from the list. Their name, job title and location come from their profile, so the chart stays right when they update it.
- **A name you type in** — for anybody who is not a TotalCtrl user: a new hire who has not started, a contractor, an open role, or a person at another company.

Both kinds sit side by side in the same chart, which is what makes it useful for a plan rather than only a record.
## Marking a new hire

A typed-in person can be flagged as a **new hire**, which marks the box on the chart. Use it for roles that are agreed but not filled, so a reader can tell what is real today from what is coming.
## Reporting lines

Each person sits under one other person. Anybody with nobody above them is a top-level box, and you can have more than one — useful for a chart of two teams that do not share a manager.
## Removing somebody removes their reports

Deleting a box deletes everything under it. If you want to keep the people below, move them somewhere else first.
