# Trial and lifecycle information on contacts

**Category:** [CRM](https://help.totalctrl.app/hc/totalctrl/totalctrl-help-center/en-US/categories/crm-1)
**Updated:** 2026-10-04

The trial journeys need to know where each person is in their trial. That information is kept on the contact record and refreshed as things change.
### Lifecycle stage

- Someone inside an active trial is a **Lead** — still deciding.
- Everyone else is a **Customer**: free plans, paying accounts, and lapsed trials alike. A free-plan account is a customer of the product, not an open sales lead.

### Trial details

Each contact also carries how many days remain, whether the trial has already ended, and which plan the account is on. These refresh as the trial counts down, which is what lets “3 days left” mean the same thing tomorrow as it does today.
### What this means for targeting

A contact with no trial information is never swept into a trial email. If TotalCtrl does not know someone's trial state, that person is left out rather than guessed at.
