# Use /issues from Slack

**Category:** [Slack for Issue Tracking](https://help.totalctrl.app/hc/totalctrl/totalctrl-help-center/en-US/categories/issues-slack)
**Updated:** 2026-10-04

## The three forms

- `/issues PROJ-42` — look up an issue and post its card.
- `/issues create <title>` — raise a new issue.
- `/issues assign PROJ-42 someone@example.com` — assign it.

Anything else gets a short usage reminder, visible only to you.
## Assigning takes an email address, not a Slack handle

This is the one that surprises people. **Slack usernames are not mapped to TotalCtrl accounts.** The address you type is matched against your workspace's own members, so `@dana` will not work and `dana@yourcompany.com` will.

It is deliberate: mapping handles would mean asking your Slack workspace for everybody's email address, which is a much larger permission than this feature is worth.
## Where a created issue lands

Into the project set on a Slack configuration if one names a project, otherwise the workspace's first project. If you run several projects, point a configuration at the one you want new issues to default to.
