# Building segments

A **segment** is a reusable, named audience built from rules over your contact directory. The same segment can drive campaigns and journeys, so you define an audience once.
### Rules

Each rule is a *field*, an *operator*, and a *value*; all rules must match (AND). Fields include email, name, company, phone, and created/updated dates. Date fields also support relative operators like *more than N days ago* and *within the last N days* — great for behavioral targeting such as win-back audiences.

The builder shows a live **matching-contacts** count as you edit, so you always know how big an audience is before you save it.
