# What is Engage?

Engage is TotalCtrl's multi-channel customer engagement platform — a single place to message your customers across **email, SMS, mobile push, and in-app**, with reusable audiences, one-shot campaigns, and automated journeys.
### The shared engagement layer

Every message — whether from a campaign, a journey, or the API — flows through the same layer:

- **Segments** define *who* to reach, over your unified contact directory.
- A single **consent & frequency gate** decides whether each contact can be messaged on each channel.
- A channel backend delivers the message and records delivery + outcome events.

Because everything shares this layer, suppression, opt-outs, consent, and frequency capping are enforced in exactly one place — you can't accidentally message someone who opted out.
### Two ways to send

- **Campaigns** — a one-shot broadcast to a segment on one or more channels.
- **Journeys** — multi-step, multi-channel automations that enroll contacts and send over time.
