# Set due dates, priorities, and tags

**Category:** [Tasks](https://help.totalctrl.app/hc/totalctrl/totalctrl-help-center/en-US/categories/tasks-1)
**Updated:** 2026-08-19

## Due dates

Give a task a due date to make it show up in the right place. A task due today appears in **Today**; a task due in the next seven days appears in the matching day of **Upcoming**. If a due date passes and the task is still open, it is flagged as **overdue** and surfaced at the top of the Today view so it does not get forgotten. You can set or clear a due date from the quick-add bar or the task detail panel.
## Priorities

Each task carries one of four priority levels:

- **P1 — Urgent** (red)
- **P2 — High** (orange)
- **P3 — Medium** (blue)
- **P4 — Low** (grey, the default)

A colored priority dot appears next to each task, and views sort by priority first, so your most important work rises to the top automatically.
## Tags

Tags are free-form labels like `#errands` or `#finance` that cut across lists. Add them inline with `#` in quick-add, or edit a task's tags from its detail panel. Tag names are stored in lowercase and reused, so typing `#Work` and `#work` resolves to the same tag. Use tags to group related tasks that live in different lists. For faster capture of all of these at once, see [Add tasks quickly with quick-add](add-tasks-quickly).
