# Create your first newsletter

## Start a new newsletter

From the Newsletter app, open the newsletter list and choose **New**. A newsletter is the publication that holds your subscribers and editions, so most accounts create one per audience or brand.
## Fill in the details

- **Name** (required) — the publication name shown to subscribers and in admin.
- **Slug** — used in your public URLs. Leave it blank and one is generated from the name; duplicates are automatically de-duplicated.
- **Description** — optional summary shown on your subscribe page.
- **Display name** (required) — the from name recipients see in their inbox.
- **Reply-to** — optional address that receives replies.
- **Footer text** — your physical mailing address and any legal text. This is required before you can send.

## Choose how you send

Pick a sending mode. **TotalCtrl** sends from a shared TotalCtrl address with zero setup — ideal to get started. **Custom** sends from your own domain once you verify it; see [Connect a custom sending domain](connect-a-custom-sending-domain).
## What happens next

After you save, you land on the editions list for the new newsletter. From there you can write your first edition, customize branding in Settings, and start collecting subscribers.
