# Create and organize spaces

## What spaces are

Spaces are the sections that organize your community. Every new community starts with a **General** discussion space, and you can add as many more as you need from the **Spaces** page.
## Create a space

On the Spaces page, give the new space a **name** (required) and an optional **description**. Pick an **icon** (an emoji) and a **space type**:

- **discussion** — open threads
- **events** — event-style posts
- **resources** — curated links and materials
- **chat** — lightweight conversation
- **announcements** — updates from your team

## Access controls

Each space has three toggles:

- **Hidden** — the space is only visible to admins and moderators.
- **Locked** — only admins and moderators can post.
- **Members can post** — when off, members can read but not start threads.

## Reordering and editing

New spaces are added to the end of the list. You can drag spaces to reorder them, and the new order is saved automatically. Use **Edit** on any space to change its name, description, icon, type, or access toggles, and **Delete** to remove a space (this also removes its posts). Once your spaces are ready, [invite members](invite-and-manage-members) to join them.
