# Registering for an event, and the waitlist

## Register, or join the waitlist

Open any event and press **Register**. If the event has a capacity and it is already full, the button reads **Join the waitlist** instead — you are placed on the waitlist automatically rather than being turned away.
### If a registered attendee cancels

The earliest person on the waitlist is promoted into the open seat automatically, and emailed to say so. Nobody has to notice the cancellation and act on it manually.
### Managing your own registration

From the event page, a registered or waitlisted member can cancel their own place at any time, right up until the event's registration closes (if the organizer has set a closing time) or the event starts.
### Reminders

Registered members get an email reminder 24 hours before an event, and again 1 hour before. Reminders and the registration confirmation both respect the “Group activity and Events” preference on the member's email preferences page — except the confirmation you get immediately after registering, which is treated as a receipt of your own action rather than a notification you might want to turn off.
### Checking people in

Whoever can manage the event can open its Registrations page and check attendees in as they arrive. A checked-in attendee's status changes from *registered* to *attended*.
