# Events: creating them, and who is allowed to

## Optional at two levels

Events can be turned off entirely for a community — the switch is in Community Settings → General. That is the master switch: turning it off hides Events everywhere, on every page, regardless of what any individual Group has set.

Each Group also has its own Events switch, in that Group's settings. It only matters when the community's own switch is on — a Group cannot turn Events on for itself if the community has turned them off.
### Community-wide, or scoped to a Group

An event can belong to no Group at all (visible to the whole community) or to one specific Group. A Group's own visibility rules apply to its events too: an event scoped to a Hidden group is only visible to that group's members, exactly like any other content in it.
### Who can create, edit, or cancel an event

Not every member can create an event. Three kinds of people can manage events:

- A **community admin or moderator** — can manage any event, anywhere.
- A member with the **“Can manage community-wide Events”** flag — set on their Member Detail page by an admin. This lets someone run Events without being made a full moderator.
- A **Group Admin** — can manage only the events scoped to their own Group.

Everyone else can view events and register for them, but the New Event button and the edit/cancel actions are simply not offered.
### Cancelling an event

Cancelling notifies every registered and waitlisted member by email — this one is not optional and is not affected by anyone's notification preferences, because missing a cancellation means turning up to nothing.
